“A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace and live beneath the sun again where trees and flowers grow.”
Clan Blackstar, the enigmatic clan of moon elves, once living within Myth Drannor migrated deep within The Wealdath.
To this day Cyrien doesn’t know exactly why the Blackstar Clan migrated from the northern forests of Cormanthor to create a secret haven within the Wealdath as the elders of the clan would rarely speak about it. What he does know is that the migration occurred shortly after the fall of Myth Drannor (the fabled magical city of learning and enlightenment). During the invasion of Myth Drannor, the then head of the clan Aelemar Blackstar (his name meaning ‘Knight of Duty’), wielder of the clan’s ancestral Moonblade ‘Shaeveril’ fought in the counterattack against the demonic and undead onslaught in an attempt to cut a swathe through the enemies large enough for the survivors of the initial assault to flee into the forest. Although the defenders were slaughtered, Aelemar’s valiant efforts, along with those of the other defenders, saw many of his people to safety. Aelemar then led a heroic rear-guard action to hold the waves of enemies at bay giving the refugees just long enough to escape – a final stand which would have almost certainly meant a fight to the death. None know of his fate for certain, wether he was killed or captured. Regardless, he is still hailed as the hero who saved the clan from annihilation all those years ago. His loss and the loss of Shaeveril were hard for the clan to bare.
Tragedy followed the clan as 576 years after leaving Myth Drannor, an evil army wiped them out because of their worship of Eilistraee and support against the forces of evil.
The origins for their worship of Eilistraee came about in their ancestry when an Avatar of Eilistraee fell in love with the great bladesinger Loriath Blackstar. Since then all Blackstar clan members have worshiped Eilistraee and have endeavoured to uphold her virtues and help bring light and freedom to those trapped within the darkness of The Underdark.
The clan kept its existence and whereabouts secret through the use of a dimensional field that enclosed their village and the glade in which they held their rituals in honour of Eilistraee. This was then further protected by the good Drow that had been rescued from the darkness of The Underdark.
All members of the Blackstar Clan learnt the way of the bladesinger from their parents as to be able to assist in freeing The Underdark and supporting all goods battles against evil.
Ever since Cyrien was born everyone knew he was the chosen of Eilistraee and that he would be the one to bring great change and peace to the world in Eilistraee’s name. Cyrien was born with and over abundance of magic energy which showed in his outwards appearance as his hair glowed and vibrant blue and his eyes sparkled with power.
This almost worship of Cyrien by his fellow clan members brought with it a great resentment of Cyrien from his twin brother Renack. Renack was as equally skilled as Cyrien in everyway and yet was always overshadowed by his brother’s achievements, this ultimately leads to Renack’s betrayal. He was the one that removed the protections allowing the evil army access to the village.
Cyrien’s father, Gilevar Blackstar, who had had gone deep within The Underdark many times and was revered as a hero by many, was the one that began Cyrien’s training in the ways of the bladesinger, whereas Cyrien’s mother, Vael Blackstar, was always there to offer support and a loving hand.
40 years after Cyrien’s birth the village was destroyed and the clan slaughtered by an evil army, who still to this day have not been identified. Cyrien watched as his father was killed and his mother struck down and raped. With her dieing breath she teleported Cyrien away with nothing more than a request “find your brother”.
Commander Raighn was an ex-mercenary who once worked for the corrupt nobles of Tethyr, however after seeing their greedy backstabbing and genocidal ways for so long, he finally refused to follow their orders, broke his contract and left during the civil war. He found the unconscious body of Cyrien lying beside the road during his departure, took pity on him and took him in. He travelled to his home city of Ilipur on the Dragon Coast to raise him as his adopted son. When he learnt of Cyrien’s natural magical talent, he sought aid from his cousin, the Archmage Dario who tutored Cyrien. Dario has since been killed, assassinated by an unknown attacker, his wizard tower looted and burnt and a strange sigil had be branded into hos forhead. Raighn lived and worked in Ilipur as a warden on the dock front training marines teaching them the arts of combat, which Cyrien also took part in, until he passed away peacefully shortly before Cyrien’s 81st birthday. During this time Cyrien took the time to take in the teachings and in turn became a very skilled sorcerer and fighter. These he would later use as stepping stones to continue his training as a bladesinger.
50 years later rumours of another evil army assaulting Daggerdale began to catch Cyrien’s ear. Cyrien decided this was a good time to go out and find his place in the world as he had also heard rumours of a Moon Elf of similar description to his brother had been causing talk all over the place.
Upon reaching Daggerdale, Cyrien realises the Zhents are not the same as the soldiers that slaughtered his family. But because of the teachings of Eilistraee he decides to stay and fight against the Zhents, saving anyone he could while hindering the tyranny of the Zhents.
After fighting the Zhents in Daggerdale for 30 years, Cyrien joins a group of adventurers in the local tavern in Shadowdale to obtain any information about the Zhents locations and plans, but upon hearing the request from Lhaos he decides the join this group and assist in saving Randal Morn.
The Moonblade Shaeveril:
Shaeveril is an elven ‘leaf blade’ style longsword, crafted from the purest obsidian and a magical weapon of great power. Its blade is a glossy black, with a line of elven symbols run up its centre, the hilt is made of silver and inlaid with sapphires. The entire sword is sheathed in a strong blue radiance which sometimes pulses with energy. Legend tells that the sword was in fact originally forged by the Drow of the Underdark. After a group of Drow refugees made it to the surface with the sword and rejoined their surface cousins, the sword was forged anew as a symbol of the alliance between Drow and Moon Elf, each race contributing to its renewed power. Shaeveril is known to have been preternaturally sharp, never to dull, spells could be cast from its blade and its wielder could strike with supernatural speed in combat.
Rennack: The Betrayer
Cyrien’s most recent lead on his traitorous brother’s whereabouts was that he was travelling the Moonsea region and is possibly in league with the Zhentarim (however this is an unconfirmed rumour), or seeking an alliance with them. The Zhentarim leadership is made up of a circle of powerful wizards, so he could be seeking to further his power. However, the Zhents are known to have little tolerance for non-humans, so it would be unlikely he’d be accepted into their ranks.
Rennack has always craved magical power, something Cyiren was naturally born with but which he was denied.
Cyrien has occasionally had a dream-vision from Elistraee, where he sees a of a ring of fire suspended in the air with Rennack standing nearby.
